Very informative and validates my observations about some of the new hoses supplied by VW vendors that I have seen in advanced states of decomposition after a very short life.

Folks, be persistent in your information-gathering as you purchase hoses.

I have stopped using the cloth braided hose due to rapid decompostion. FLAPS Goodyear (non FI) hose is great stuff. Schucks carries it. Seems to last a lot longer, and is thicker too with decent internal reinforcement.

Also check brass fittings in carbs/fuel pumps! They are usually the culprit for engine fires. If loose, knurl with vicegrips etc. and tap back into place. Some like to safety wire them in place as well.

Remember the difference between a carb and FI. FI must use a high pressure rated fuel line so I always go to the Porsche dealer to buy the fuel line as its in spec for newer gas mixtures. Cheap to buy a few feet and replace than have a split fuel line on the freeway with a loaded down camper and smoke pouring out of the back!
