Yet another FI fuel line Q

Post by DjEep » Sun Mar 09, 2008 7:13 pm

Will the pump and/or pressure regulator keep the flow of fuel in check when I change the hoses in the engine bay? Or do I need to plug/clamp both ends. There's still about 5-8 gallons in there (drove from portland to eugene on a full tank) . If I do need to clamp/plug, where?

Get 2 of these:

and go under the bus and put one on the return line and one before the pump.

Available from your local Mercedes dealer using the part number you see on it :)

I just use these, only smaller. You're gonna spill some gas no matter what you do. Usually just enough to clean up with a rag. If you only use one, on the tank, side catch the fuel from the filter side with your 1 gallon gas can, put it back in the bus or a lawnmower. There still won't be much.

A golf tee jammed up the fuel line will work too. Just don't leave it unattended, it may pop out if left for a period of time.

Yeah, I use the golf tee trick on type1 engines, I'd think a pencil "wood" work better on thicker FI lines. I'm gonna go to Harbor Freight to look for some clamping devices. I saw those things Karl mentioned online for $20 each! Yikes!

But they do no damage to the hoses like the needle nose vise grips do.

I like to put a small piece of fuel hose over each side of the jaws of the vise-grips. I just cut about 2" and split it lengthwise. It has worked for me without causing damage or requiring a special tool.

I do use the small fuel clamps for leaving on the vehicle when I pull and engine. They do rust up, but they keep stuff out of my fuel lines. I used to buy them from the Mac or Matco guy and I think I got them 4 for about $15.

Good tip. With the mini-needlenose visegrips and 12mm breather hose, you can slip the hose sections on without cutting.

The fuel hose clamps are a very very nice tool to have around and cheaper then a pair of vice grips (nope, I don't have any vice grips :cyclopsani: ). Nice and easy on the lines and completely effective.

Did you notice at the GermanSupply site that the Canadian Dollar is actually worth more than the US dollar?

Well, shucks. Mine are on their way from Canada. No biggie - I know I'll use them again.

FYI - they will be available to anyone who needs them in the PDX area (if I'm not using them at that time).

They are really handy when you want to clamp off a vacuum line also.
