S/P Manifold

Well I ordered the OEM type1 single port from Aircooled.net. I'll let you know how it goes. $52 not bad. Hope it's gray. (I'm a geek)

Got it, looks nice except the paint is scratched all over...
Will regular spray paint work or do I need to use the high temp stuff? The stuff on there looks like nuthin' special.

When I replaced Elwoods about two yrs ago, after going thru all the soaking, drilling ect to try to unclogg the old one with no luck. I went to a bone yard that had 100's of them. Took going thru 25 to find one clear one. The yard sand blasted inside and out. I painted it with Dupli Color High Heat w/ceramic 1200o along with new heater boxes and exhaust.
I just went out to check how they looked. Not bad considering where and what I put him thru up north. Slight peeling on edges and rust starting on exhaust. So there ya go with my experiance and Im not so quick to maintain :geek:

Is this for the bus or bug? And will you be pulling the engine?

It's for the Beetle, no need to pull the engine hopefully.
I just used Rustoleum gray th' hell with it. Only place it gets really hot is near the head and it can just burn off if it has to. I'm sure the shroud paint is just regular paint too and it holds up fine. We'll see!

That little heater pipe for the carb gets DANG hot. The paint will start flaking off after a while on the left side especially... I painted the one in my Beetle with high-temp exhaust paint and even it's flaking....

There was a thin coat of crappy gray on the manifold from the factory, I just sprayed a light coat over it because of all the scratches. Yeah I'm sure you're right but those things start lookin like crap soon enough! Especially on a daily driver, they get used. My bus engine looked all fancy at first and now it's all stained and weathered...still runs good at least.
Weirdly, the Rustoleum was EXACTLY the same shade of gray already on the part.
Also, while the manifold is OE Brazil, it's not German....I had to file the carb flange due to flash/uneveness, as well as the head flange with a big blob of weld leftover. The materials seem ok but the craft just isn't there. A shame but they can't be payin those factory folks much.

Ya I hear you on the fit. Even the one I got from the bone yard with vw stamped had to be filed and tweaked to fit with shim washers to the heads. But like you, it looks wrong but gets me on the roads I want to go.

The paint to me was a pita. I bought the best I could find from WBW and got great shipping and was sadly disipointed at the gray flaky coat on heater boxes and muffler. I spent many hours tring to strip it per Colins visit at that time. I have learned and understand now ~ not all us users of the AC are alike ~ I just want mine to run good and get me there. It did in all it's tacky glory

I really read all advice and have found that the best way is to just do what is right for you and your ride. ALA Muir :flower:

Arrgh what a frustrating day.
Everything came apart OK but a heat riser/muffler bolt snapped, and a manifold stud stripped out...not to mention the #$@$@@% manifold did not fit right until Gypsie showed up and saved the day. Had to Dremel the stud opening in the manifold to make it fit. Just made it in time to the parts store for a couple new studs, one of the perks to living in VW Habitat.
Brazilian VW parts are an exercise in frustration. There is a considerable quality difference from German VW, I'm quite disappointed that the manifold wasn't better made.
The old manifold cracked in 1/2 due to a clogged and internally gone heat riser tube. I can't believe someone re-used that part on a rebuild.
Still have to finish putting the engine back together, it's sitting at home waiting for me. At least I have something to look forward to after work....
Next time, tie rods. Gotta love it when people neglect their VWs.
Also looking for advice on adjusting the thermostat, I posted a thread in Type1.

Yeah, just the heat riser had holes. It cracked in 1/2 by stepping on it! Heat riser was clogged too with a big crack running across the jacketing. I'm so relieved to have this job done, was really bothering me.
