Thanks Colin. Have you found any of these companies more reputable?

Re: 7 pin AFM for 1978 bus 2.0 F.I.
One more question. The serial number on my current AFM is 0280200018, do I need to find that exact number? or will any AFM for a 1978 bus work, such as this, REMANUFACTURED - Bosch 0280200006 Mass Air Flow Meter MAF AFM Sensor? Thanks again! kh

According to ratwell's fuel injection swap page, your model number ending in "018" would be the AFM for a '76/'77 bus. Take a browse. There's lots of good information at his site. It's possible that you have an early-year '78 that still used the older AFM.khargis wrote:One more question. The serial number on my current AFM is 0280200018, do I need to find that exact number?
Note that both of the AFMs offered by German Supply and Bus Depot are units remanufacured by Fuel Injection Corporation (here in Livermore, BTW). The Bus Depot part number 410020 happens to be the same as the FI Corp. part number.
The direct replacement for your 018 AFM would be the FI Corp 410018.
Interestingly, FI Corp seems to have dropped the 410020 from their product line, so if you're sure that's the one you need, better grab it from Bus Depot while you can.
Also interestingly, Bus Depot seems to be able to offer the FI Corp AFMs for less than FI Corp sells them for. Go figure.

Hey slow lane, after reading on ratwells about the afm's, my 018 and 020 are compatible. So I guess I have some options. Anyway, thanks again. K

Re: 7 pin AFM for 1978 bus 2.0 F.I.
I'm not surprised. It's good to have options. I suspect that there are more similarities than differences between the AFMs for different years.khargis wrote:Hey slow lane, after reading on ratwells about the afm's, my 018 and 020 are compatible. So I guess I have some options.
Here's why I think so: I have two FI-Corp rebuilt AFMs. One for my Federal-FI-equipped Vanagon, and another which is for the CA FI system that I eventually plan to adapt onto this vehicle. Both AFMs use the identical model of Bourns potentiometer board inside, suggesting that the only real difference between the two is in how they are set up, spring-and-wiper-wise.
For interest's sake, it would be nice to know what the make and model of boards people have inside their AFMs. It coud open up a whole host of interchange possibilities.
Can we start a catalog? The potentiometer boards in my AFMs have Bourns model number 1 288 310 021. Anyone else?

Re: 7 pin AFM for 1978 bus 2.0 F.I.
I have suggested this very thing. Federal emissions laws required sealed components, set up for very specific engines. They do use the same AFMs across a dizzying array of different engines, and they all had to have different part numbers. for plug-n-play compliance with applicable laws. The same is true of many distributors and vacuum advance/retard cans.SlowLane wrote:suggesting that the only real difference between the two is in how they are set up, spring-and-wiper-wise.

What I want to know is how and where did he get his hands on "Bourns" resistor boards. They are NLA, and manufacturer no longer produces them.... I wonder what really gets fixed.
