Fuel Gauge & Sender Question

Post by jonyem » Sat Jul 14, 2012 11:02 pm

Will a 68-73 sender work with a 73-79 gauge?

Thanks

Nope. Different animals altogether. Electrically and physically.

This is the early style.

This is the later style.

The early style attaches to the tank with screws, the later uses a bayonet "twist-lock" style of attachment.

As different as they are physically, they're even more so electrically.

Thanks for the help.
I take it there isn't a way to make the two work together without a Frankenstein fix?

That settles that. Thanks.

As I mentioned in a different post I needed to replace my fuel tank because there was a lot of rust in it, not long until the bottom becomes Swiss cheese. So we (myself and my mechanic) sourced a really nice fuel tank from Portland. They ended up sending a tank that takes an early sender, but my bus is the late style. Instead of sending it back and trying to find one that works, we thought we could get an early sender and make it work. Ended up getting a used sender, that has resistance, but it wouldn't work with the gauge. I wish I had thought of it sooner, but I'm glad to know that no matter how good an early sender is, it won't work with my later gauge.

I can't say for sure, but I would be skeptical that you could even get the early-style tank to work in the late bus, gauge sender be damned. I just looked at pictures of both of my tanks and they're quite different in quite a few ways, the sender being just one.

I hate to say, but I think you should reconsider plan 'A' and return the tank in favor of the correct one.

Yeah, the wrong tank is going back and will be getting right one.
