I see that the fresh air chamber below the grille is clogged with debris - leaves, dirt needles. The slots are too thin for a vacuum cleaner. Will pulling the fresh air control box give me access to this area? There is no access from the trunk. What a strange design. How would one get in there to paint or treat rust?
The type1 design seems much more logical - the fresh air box is just below the grille itself instead of that captive body ducting.

Re: '72 type3 Fresh Air Vent
Remove the entire fresh air plenum, it is easy. There are some cables and rack-and-pinions at the fresh air knobs. Clean and paint! Repair the drain hose connections!hambone wrote:I see that the fresh air chamber below the grille is clogged with debris - leaves, dirt needles. The slots are too thin for a vacuum cleaner. Re: '72 type3 Fresh Air Vent
Where in the world is this on a type 3? Drain holes on the inside of the car?
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue, I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. Where never lark, or even eagle flew. And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod, The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Re: '72 type3 Fresh Air Vent
Thank you Colin. I have done this on the '68 Beetle but that's not much to brag about.
It's just like a Beetle, but down lower in the body. There is a steel ducting/tubish/tapered thing that is part of the body. The plastic air box sits down at the bottom of this, behind the dash. Very much like a Beetle but buried in the body.
