Itinerant Air-Cooled

so I am doing the vapor barrier over again as I did not go wide enough of the flap (right to left) I did notice that I don't have any of those black push in washers. Mine uses metal clips. When I did a test with the previously new vapor barrier, I did see water come out of where I had pierced the plastic for these metal clips. What to do, what to do? Do I order new door panels and get them with plastic grommets and clips or do I just pierce the second set of new vapor barriers and deal with the few drops that will come in?

PS, my panels are wood.
PPS I do get water into the speakers so I'm making an envelope for that,not just a flap, but a pocket.

Yep. The flap needs to be easily as wide as mentioned in the article if not a bit wider.
You need the rubber grommets for the metal clips as mentioned in the article. They are not washers. They are sealed pockets for the clips. Water just trickles right in if you decide not to use the parts that originally came with your VW.

Assuming I can put my panels back on till they arrive.

I will be experimenting with the speaker pocket. You'll like this.
I'm using a heavy plastic I got cheep. It's often used to cover seats (think of your Moms couch in 1970)
I took a metal mixing bowl, flipped it upside down on the stove and put the burner on low.
Once it warmed up, I pulled the plastic down over it stretching it out.
I went through two of them before I got the technique down, but now have two pieces of plastic stretched out to make room for the stupid speakers.

By the way, I only had to redo the driver side, but when I saw I needed to make the flap longer, despite not getting any water int he Passenger side, I had to do them both over. Also wanted to repaint the interior of the PS door where work had been done before and I could see surface rust.

Lastly, ANYONE who fixes a bus (restores it) and does not install a vapor barrier should be shot. What are people thinking?

My BobD panels are deteriorating . . . some of my rubber grommets have split, the vent window seals are giving it up, the panels are warping a bit near the air extractors . . . why is the Universe so fond of decay?

PS, found a company selling Pre Made Vapor Barriers.

They are not aware of a flap. Now I'm not sure if the flap was an add on or not, but it is the only way to have a waterproof Vapor Barrier.

The flap was a factory-engineered solution as of the introduction of the air extractors (1972).

So early buses didn't have the flap? I thought I should, just to keep water from pooling up between the barrier and door frame.

I don't blow $19.95, so I can buy a roll of 4mil for $9 and get a free second set of barriers……

Bus clips and rubber grommets now available from Just Kampers and CIP1. They are, IIRC 7mm holes, unlike the 8mm bug clips and grommets where Bus Depot is saying to drill out the holes. Do NOT drill out the holes!

Cool, I have not used the ones I got from Bus Depot, guess I'll return them.

Also, you need more of a pocket than a flap for the speakers. The flap will vibrate with any bass. Truth be told, so will the pocket if you don't get it right. I'm thinking of just doing fiberglass speaker enclosures to resolve the vibration in one speaker pocket I'm experiencing.

I also got proper sized bus clips and grommets from Wolfsburg West.
