Door lock mechanism

Post by hambone » Fri Aug 22, 2008 10:52 am

Type 2 Front door
The spring(s) within the lock mechanism do not engage with the lever that opens the door. The outside door handle will not unlatch the door catch but the inside still works.
Is this repairable or do I have to buy a new assembly? I see there are mulitple springs in there. Bentley of course is of little help.
Any idea of the quality of these?

totally repairable. i have always cannibalized springs, etc from old mechanisms with perfect success. if you collect that stuff you shouldn't have a problem.

Thank you Mr. MacTell. I'll git that mechanism out and see if I can fix it.

I tried that type2.com procedure a couple years ago and got to the "remove the rear window guide channel step" and could go no further. I couldn't get the guide channel out no matter how hard I tried - even did the "good yank downward" and absolutely nothing. After half an hour, I was so pissed off and frustrated that I eventually gave up and put everything back together - my bus defeated me on that day.

Bob, if you can get the guide channel out, please tell me your secret because I must have been doing something wrong.

The black metal channel is held on with a 10mm bolt and a little tongue-in-groove. The trick is to look up in there and see the tongue locked into the slot (groove). You only need to pry the channel towards the front of the door a little to convince the tongue to escape the groove, then sharply yank (tap) the channel down to release it from the door.
YMMV

Bob, 3M makes a spray adhesive ("General Purpose 45") that works great for this. I bought some 4mil plastic sheeting at Ace, used one of my old ones as a template, and cut out the correct shape. A little spray of the adhesive on the door, and the plastic stuck nicely. It releases enough to allow slight adjustments.

If you need a template, I can probably dig the old one out...

I taped mine off to avoid overspray onto the areas that aren't covered by the door panel. Then you can simply (carefully) trim the plastic to fit with a razor after it's mounted.
