Baking painted items?

Post by hambone » Mon Feb 12, 2007 1:46 pm

Anyone experiment with baking smaller painted items in the oven for hardness/drying? Just painted my wiper arms, trying to think of ways to make em' last...especially on the front of the vehicle.

Have not done the bake thing so can,t give any advice. My wiper arms are also in need of some gray/silver coating but never thought of removing them, they have the famous Colin adjustment :flower: and I fear I would,nt get them back on right. I can and have masked other areas on the bus just to keep the weather off till a major paint job. I will read this thread with interest and please post picts. Thanks, Barb

Just a splined shaft, they slide right off with a little encouragement after taking the nut off.
Used "aluminum" paint, looks very close to stock if not dead on.

Found this on the web, any thots?

For SERIOUS black gloss painting buy Engine enamel in a spray can.

Sand the parts to remove the gouges, if you care.

Finish sand the parts with 400 to give some "teeth" for the new paint.

Spray with engine enamel.

Give it a VERY light "tack" coating.

Wait about three minutes for it to tack up.

Then, give it a single good coat of paint, just so it looks evenly "wet."

Let dry at least over night.

Put your oven rack in the TOP position in your oven when your wife is no where about.

Suspend the parts by their mounting holes with paper clips or bent pieces of coat hanger. Bake the parts like brownies. ~325 for ~20 minutes.

Let cool.

Mount. (The smell won't last very long in the kitchen. It won't linger in the oven at all. Take her out to dinner.)

 thats classic! I painted my engine tin, after mucho cleaning and sanding with gloss black rattle can high heat enamal for ?? What ever? Looks good to me but in hind-site, will do it next time in lighter color to see the oil splatter better. Went with the black because of reading way too much about keeping it original :cyclopsani: can appreciate the science of the cooling factors but this engine is far from original (external oil-cooler ect.) Also painted new heater boxes and muffler with -best I could find - rattle can paint after stripping all factory paint from german new parts. After about 3,000 miles and winter snow, no salt! major pealing :pale:

Took a closer look at wiper arms with new camera in hand today for closeups??? Looks easy enough to remove them and paint them perty. Thanks for the advice Hambone, pictures will come latter :geek: I now know why so many UFO sittings have been photografted :alien: My full moon attemp last week will for-sure prove they do excist :flower:

Ok, here's what happened.
I let the paint dry overnight, still soft but dry to the touch.
Put the arms in a 200 degree F. oven for 30 minutes. There was some paint smell but nothing severe. The finish does look harder, but we'll see. One of the pot-metal splined parts did bubble up the paint a bit, but the other one is perfect. Strange...it's not enough to worry about so I'm not.

Thanks for the pix Hambone, why wouldn,t they be ok

I needed to see not only your before and after, very nice job by the way, but what kind of nuts your '69 had. Mine has two diff kind and I was not sure which was the original. Now I know what to look for to replace.

Also see that your camera takes purple hues really fine on that little model in front of the bus :flower: What does Eva call the bus?

heh! She calls it "Papa's Camper - No, Eva's camper too" (I explained that I don't OWN it, we all do as a family. She likes the concept and it's cute to hear her correct herself mid sentence)
Those capped nuts are stainless steel and clean up nicely with Brasso. I can see myself! The one on the left was sanded with 220 paper, then Brasso'ed.

You'll be proud! Also take some car wax (mebbe rubbing compound if that doesn't work) to your stripes to gid rid of streaks. Carefully!

Yes.
And this thread is appropriately located in body/hardware where painting tips are appreciated.
