Oxidized Paint

Post by mattg » Fri Feb 02, 2007 8:49 am

I had to have some body work done last year and a few of the areas were resprayed - turned out good but now I need to restore some of the orginal paint areas that are oxidized. What is the best way to do this - I just want to restore the shine to the orginal paint and I think when I do it will match the areas that were resprayed.
I'm all out of ideas and I've tried nothing.

VW enamel responds very well to elbow grease.
I recommend 3M Rubbing Compound in small increments and plenty of muscle, then finish with a Mother's Carnauba Wax/Cleaner.

NuFinish works pretty well also. Orange bottle.

Try a cleaner wax. I like Maguiars, but Mother's is pretty good too.

I used Turtle Wax polishing compound, and a wool bonnet attached to an electric hammer drill. (Along with some lift off for the spray paint.) Then followed up with 100% Carnuba wax.

Kind of hard to read but the best I could find:

Here's more from elsewhere:

"FINAL RESULTS
First Place Zaino Z-2 Show Car Polish
Second Place Zymol Natural Liquid Auto Polish (maybe made by Turtle wax)
Third Place Zymol NSX Glaze
Fourth Place Meguiar's Gold Class, Liquid Clear Coat Car Wax
As you can see, the Zaino Z-2 Show Car Polish was the best, hands down. For the money and availability (Wal-Mart) the Zymol Natural Liquid Auto Polish does a nice job. I guess if it's really made by Turtle Wax and bottled with Zymol's name, you could buy a similar Turtle Wax product?"

I like the old style paste form carnuba wax. (I use one by Kit http://www.kitwax.com/html/kitProducts.htm) It's pretty forgiving, and it seems to fill the really small surface scratches. It is a bit of pain to strip off though.

I sent an email off to Motsenbocker's the other day to let them know how well their stuff works. I got an email back from them saying that they had passed my letter and before and after pictures around the office, and even the owner had taken an interest in it. They're sending me some free stuff and putting my letter and pictures on their website. Cool Deal!

Inspired by your pics, I decided to see what my paint looked like underneath the layers of rattlecan & primer.

Needless to say, I'll be stripping the whole bus and touching up.

The P.O. Macco'ed my original paint. I keep seeing it as the paint flakes off in chunks... :toimonster:

Look at that green! Much better than the black rattlecan stuff around it!
