Raspy slow nasty hot, starter no good.
What about somewhat raspy and starter warm? Trying to isolate an intermittent start issue. I don't think it's the switch, the lights are doing their thing and there is no engine-konkout while driving. Starter otherwise tests OK. I think it's the solenoid.

BTW thank you for these simple and elegant troubleshooting steps. Advice is often lost in the chatter.

Judgment call. Warm is expected, the starter is the highest amperage consumer on the grid. If it spins the engine at 200 rpm, I wouldn't be too worried about the sound. If it can barely hit once a second, then noise may indicate a problem.
