Quick Release Battery Clamps

Post by iwantmybustorun » Wed Jun 01, 2011 4:04 pm

Anyone use these? Sometimes I've seen them called disconnect switches or battery isolators(?). Any opinions?

A handly little item, get quality. Just do the negative.

Very handy indeed ~ I had these on my Volvo 240 and they were awesome. As Colin says, only the neg. I did the positive, but you only use it when changing batteries. The neg comes off every time you do something.

Pictures of the type I used are surprisingly hard to find. Here's a different shaped one, but it works the same way ~ it uses a lever-type quick release.http://www.jcwhitney.com/battery-discon ... 2420.jcwx#

The type I had can be found in any FLAPS I think. They're in with the battery terminals, and will have a lever quick release attached to a typical round terminal end. You stick the wires in one side, adjust the lever, and then slide the round terminal section down over the post, and then close the lever.

I think the ones I had were pretty cheap, but I never had a problem with them. Perhaps Colin can explain what he hmeans by "quality"... Examples, Oh my Captain?

I do. Took a tip from Jay Leno who stores many cars and has them on all his machines to help prevent a spontaneous fire from old wiring at 3 o'clock in the morning. I disconnect mine when it's going to be parked for any length of time. I do not have full coverage insurance on the bus, and do not entirely trust old, hidden wiring.
Quality for me is the one I got from AAP seven years ago and had no trouble with it.
