Power To The Coil In A 1977 Bus With FI Removed.

For the time being I'll be using carbs in my Bus instead of FI. There is no power wire to the coil so I read the diagram and I guess that comes off of the double relay. Since I won't be using the FI components what else can I safely wire power to the coil from?

The power to the coil (terminal 15) comes from the ignition switch. That power then continues on to the double relay. If you temporarily suspend your FI system, you don't need to provide power to the coil as it's already provided by the ignition switch.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your question. :scratch:

The FI system is completely independent of the car's electrical system. Find the loom that includes the wire that leads to the oil pressure switch. The other wire in that loom is a black wire that is the power SUPPLY to the coil from the ignition switch.

When I scanned the diagram it looked like the harness from the double relay contained the wire to the coil. I hate the later wiring diagrams.

Funny you should say that. The next item I need to find is the Oil Pressure wire. The PO had the Reverse Light wire that goes to the coil hooked up to the Oil Pressure Switch instead! :pale:

My '72 is wired the way you describe. Things are slightly different in the '77. Plus, even though I labeled the wires when I pulled them, now I'm discovering that the PO seemed to just plug things in wherever so the labels don't matter. Thank God I had the '72 to reference for the tail light wiring.

My Mom is taking the brat this weekend so I'll spend lot's of time going through all the engine compartment wiring. It seems like it's all there but was just hooked to all the wrong things.

Oil Pressure Switch wire was hooked to the fan and the Coil wire had a slot connector forced into a female spade then routed to a LED toggle switch that teed into both the coil and fuel pump! I'm amazed it ran without starting a fire with all these hack jobs and misplaced wires I'm running into.

I should have looked in my dealership manual. The schematic is much better. It's the same just bigger and in larger sections.
