'73 Westy Blinkers Don't Work, Then Work Again...

Post by iwantmybustorun » Fri Aug 21, 2009 6:38 pm

... then don't work again.

Does this mean it is a bad connection?
Or could it be a bad relay?
Or is it the switch itself?

I just looked it up in the Bentley and it says to check if the hazard lights work. It's getting late so I will try this tomorrow. Has anyone has had this issue before and can shed some light?

All of the above, plus emergency switch. Do you get any quick blinky-blinky-blinky's? Then the bulb connections are suspect. Pull relay and inspect the wire terminals in the plastic block to see if any have slightly let go and have been pushed back into the plastic. Re-seat the flasher relay with De-Ox electrical contact gel.

Windshield got any leaks? I gerbed my relay with grease and covered the fuse box with a sandwich baggie. Solved the problem till I can fix windshield again.

No blinky-blinky's.
My hazard flashers don't work either.
Pulled the relay and added de-ox gel.
Still no flashers.
I purchased a cheap relay from Autozone to see if it was the relay and when I plugged it in, the interior blinker lights both lit up, but no blinking when the switch was turned to either the right or the left.

Did they ever work? Is this a recent occurrence? I would suggest checking your bulb sockets to make sure they're clean. I suspect the bulbs aren't grounding properly which won't allow current to flow which is what makes the flasher relay work. Remove the bulbs and take some emery cloth and shine up the inside of the bulb sockets. Make sure the bulbs themselves are clean and shiny too.

Thanks for your input. I'll take a look at that. And to answer your questions, Yes and yes. I stated in the first post that the work and then don't work sometimes and then now they don't work at all. This just happened this summer. I've owned the bus for about 7 years now.
