Distributor Fiber Washer Replacement

Post by hambone » Sun Mar 15, 2009 9:24 am

While installing the points the other day, I noticed that the fiber washer between the 2 upper shims and below the points cam has disintegrated. I cleaned the fragments out of the body, but of course am concerned about running the distributor without the fiber washer.
1. Are parts still available for these old distributors?
2. Are there other issues to be concerned with before I junk it? Vacuum can is fine, no side to side movement with shaft. Up and down ok obviously.
3. Any chance of getting a new vacuum-only distributor any more? SVDA doesn't play nicely with the 30/31 pict.

oooo I fergot about that!
What is the model #?
I need 113-905-205M
OR
113-905-205T

or even 111-905-205AA

There is also one out there for 1300/1500 but I think that's kinda pushing my luck for a 1600.

Thanks!

205K is for the 1300/1500.

Will that be ok for a 1600 singleport with doghouse cooling and a 30/31? Probably.

Have you sucked the vacuum can to see if the plate moves freely, stays put and then returns? Do it with the distributor too.

Here's what I have in there:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ ... ?id=705886
hmm $30 bucks not bad and it looks very clean. If yours won't work right I may go this route.
OR:
rebuilt in Portland for $100 bones: http://www.philbingroup.com/rebuilt/cat ... -0908.html
That way it would be new...

hmm they can rebuild mine too:

Very useful stuff, I've used that before from Oldvolks.

Will a distributor run right without the fiber washer? Maybe that's part of my starting problem.

That fiber washer has nothing to do with starting issues. You have a tight engine for one.

Cool man, thanks Colin. I think I'm going to get mine completely rebuilt from that outfit here in Portland once I can afford it.

I used them to rebuild the correct distributor for my bug. Mark does excellent work. I highly recommend him.

Well, I installed the 205T this weekend. First I had to solder a fitting onto the ground wire (whilst keeping 14 plates spinning on sticks).
Popped it in, set the timing and it fired right up but would not idle. Guess what, with the old worn out distributor, the mixture had to be set very lean to get it to run "right". So I reset the mixture and it now idles wonderfully. Also has lots of peppy power, and the annoying "konking out after a long downward grade" has vanished, as well as a wandering idle. It runs like a new engine, and I'm finally satisified that it's right.
So to celebrate I visited Hardware Hal and picked up 10 bags of compost. She's an official working girl now!

Thanks to Neal for the distributor, and to Bookwus for giving it to Neal originally, where it sat in a box just waiting for me. You guys are sweetie-pies. And the bus thanks you too.
