Gear Reduction Starter Installation

I recently bought this boutique starter because I'm tired of putting in a new "rebuilt" unit every couple years. Two questions.
1. The regular old starter, the shaft lives inside the bushing in the bell housing. But with this starter, the shaft with the gear on it, it doesn't reach that far. They say it's the right one for my bus. Is that right? I don't get it.
2. Assuming it is correct, I don't need a bushing there anymore, right?
3. They supply this helpful sheet for hooking up the wires (below), but of course I'm not driving a Vanagon. How do I figure out what from the bus goes where on the new starter?

I keep seeing "automatic transmission" on the instruction sheet in your photograph. Why? Why? Why?

Did you order Gear Reduction Starter (Manual) [Bus/Vanagon]
(GVW-HTS-MT)??

or did you order:
Gear Reduction Starter (Automatic) [Bus/Vanagon]
(GVW-HTS-AT)??

Your new starter is self-supporting, no more bushing nonsense.

You have a battery cable/big threaded post on the new starter. Put your old battery cable and all wires with the ring terminals on the new starter's big post.

You have a threaded new #50 terminal that requires the adapter where your old one was a push-on spade. Your red/black wire goes here. You do not have the little red/white wire that is mentioned in the instructions as belonging to the "two trigger wires". You have just one, one push-on spade terminal at the end of the red/black wire from the ignition switch. It might be going to a hot start relay, I can't remember.
You do not need the hot start relay any more, so rescue the red/black wire and get on it. Cheesehead put on her own GoWesty starter. She is a girl. Get it done. It really is that easy.

...because it's likely that GoWesty only sells the "manual transmission" gear reduction starter that's applicable for the 091-style transmission with the 228MM flywheel, which won't work with the 002/215MM in Mitch's '74, but the "automatic transmission" starter will?

Just a thought. :cyclopsani:

Tristessa is correct. Ludwig is a '74 with the late 002, aka the 002 5-rib, aka the Pyramid transaxle.

Gear Reduction Starter (Automatic) [Bus/Vanagon]
GVW-HTS-AT
Fitment notes:
• Fits all years Vanagon with automatic transaxle
• Fits all years Buses with automatic transaxle
Fits all 1968-75 Bus with manual transaxle

Gear Reduction Starter (Manual) [Bus/Vanagon]
GVW-HTS-MT
Fitment notes:
• Fits all gasoline powered Vanagons with manual transaxle, including Syncro
• Will NOT fit diesel!
• Also fits 1976-1979 Bus with manual transaxle

"Rescue" it? Feeling super dense here, maybe even as dense as a gurl (kidding, kidding, kidding).
The current starter has a bunch of ring terminals who connect to the big post on the starter and one spade connector connected to a male terminal. The new starter is shown below.
ImageI'm holding the male spade connectors, the two shown in the first GoWesty picture above. They go to that terminal with the rubber cover.
Of course all the terminals on the current starter go to the big post marked with the yellow arrow (I think I can isolate and remove any wires the soon-pointless hot start relay requires), right? The only other terminal to the current starter is, again, a female spade. Should it go to purple or green or either or neither?

Another question: What is this thing that came with the new starter in a separate baggie? A Vanagon thing?
Image

Last questions: I understand that the bushing is no longer needed, but still don't get what'll happen when this new starter is installed. The starter gear only pulls out about 10mm. Is this enough to get it to the flywheel? Am I overthinking things?

A) Hot damn.
B) Yes.
C) Yes, select one.
D) It is an adapter to allow side post starter to work with the end post car design.
E) :cyclopsani:
