Electric sink water pump keeps blowing fuses

Post by Sluggo » Thu Dec 29, 2011 12:30 pm

The water pump in my sink blows a fuse when I turn it off. Hadn't used it for a while. Turned it on and got nothing. Figured out the switch was bad (it had been sketchy) and replaced it (about 3 months later). Didn't work again but started up when I gave the pump a soft whack. Now it works but the fuse blows when I turn the switch off. I've traced all the wires and they are good. Half the wires are new.

Does this mean my pump is bad?

something grounds when the switch is turned off. when the switch is off there should be no power to the pump. check that you don't have connections bassackwards.

Just checked all the wiring and even tried switching it around. Same issue. Had to give it a light whack. Started up turned it on & off several times without issue. Then the fuse blew while the pump was running. Now it blows whenever I turn it off again.

it's odd that it blows in the off position. maybe switch is on the negative side of the pump. pump always has power. sticky pump motor has internal short. check wires with test lite. find the wire with power then make sure fuse before switch, switch before pump, other side of pump to ground.

your not using a cheap rotary switch or something are you?

i gave up on electric water pumps on my old sea ray. went with a manual one instead. lasted for years.

Figured it out. Pump is leaking internally. Would run for a few until enough water filled the inside to short it out. Put a little too muche pressure on the top of the tank and crushed / cracked it a little. Luckily it's on top. I was thinking about going to a manual pump anyway. Water shoots out of the electric ones to hard and splashes everywhere.
