2K miles and it's loose again. Not the nut nor the drum's fault they are just victims in this parade.
The threads on the stub axle are good n tight until you get the nut close to the drum - then they are loose and sloppy. Poor thing.
Can the stub shaft be removed and the bearings and seals remain installed in the bearing carrier? I would like to just replace the shaft if possible.
I'm leaving the hubcap off, maybe some rust on the threads will help keep it in place for now.

In the meantime, if someone has a '68-70 rear axle shaft at a budget rate then please let me know. Me and Maw would be much obliged.

Dang Robbie . . . hey Hambone, as an emergency get-into-town-from-nowhere fix would be to see if the threads on the stub axle are buggered just at the usual tightening spot. Then, you could add a spacer washer between the drum and the nut, and hopefully, the nut can keep the clamping force up in the good thread region. You would only need to ensure that the cotter pin can find the hole with the nut a couple of millimeters out.

Thank you Colin I wondered about that. Not a lot of room for the cotter pin hole though. I will have to replace that shaft.

I wonder if a Nord-Lock washer pair might be a solution. In addition to being thick enough to move the nut into the region of good threads, the anti-loosening feature of the Nord-Lock may very well obviate the need for a cotter pin. I'm just not sure if the Nord Lock is meant to be put under that much clamping torque, although they are made from hardened steel, so you'd think they would hold up.

The problem is not that the nuts loosen on the threads. The problem is that the clamping force disappears as the bearing race/spacer/bearing race/other spacer/drum fret, sort of like cylinder heads that "dent" in over time and you lose head torque without any nuts backing out.
