1974 Bus heat exhanger refresh

Post by whc03grady » Mon May 09, 2011 8:27 am

What can be done to clean these up real nice-like, inside and out? Can they be hot-tanked or something?

I took mine to the local pay-n-spray car wash. Prior to going, I soaked with some kind of purple cleaner stuff. In stealth mode, I filled the machine w/ $5 in quarters, set to "soapy hot blast" and let 'er rip, inside and out. They are not perfect but much improved. I'd go for the hot dip if I had to do it over again.

Is there any objection to getting them sandblasted and painted with high-heat paint?

Mine were full of rat crap. I got most of it out (i think)but worried about the stench. Who does this Hot Tank? Radiator Shop? Machine Shop?

I've had good luck with the citrus degreaser from Home Depot, the rust catalyzer, topped with Rustoleum BBQ paint, that stuff is bullet proof.
