Type 1 Gland Nut Removal

Post by hambone » Mon Apr 04, 2011 5:23 pm

Taking off the highly torqued gland nut: can it be done with an air impact wrench, or will that damage the crankshaft or nut?
Hey, what about install? Although that could be dangerous. I think I prefer the "jumping on the breaker bar" method.

I have found the gland nut to loosen with gentle jumping on a sturdy breaker bar. It may seem like nothing is happening, but just keeping at it and it lets go. Tightening is the same thing. Get your point away from the center, I am about two and a half feet out, and you lightly jump and can feel through your feet when it stops.

I could drop it by Wednesday morning, probably too late for you though.
