I'm picking them up today and getting ready for install tonight. Bill said the 1/2 side was perfect. Couldn't add much material to the hammered area on #4 but got it smoothed out and workable. He suggested I switch sides on the heads since there will be slightly more volume in that head. That way #4 will be at #1 and the slight increase in volume will make #1 (the hottest cylinder) run cooler.

Got hooked up with Tucker from Dan Hall's but he is leaving town and couldn't get them to me for a week and a half. I don't have that kind of time. I'll have him do my other heads though that way I'll have nice spares ready to go.

Put the 1/2 side together last night with Hambone. We used Hal's good P&Cs. I'll be slapping the rest together tomorrow and hopefully drive my Bus home.

Checked the deck height and found that we needed shims on the barrels. Didn't have them before and had to use rocker shims to set my geometry. Since the geometry was okay before (we have determined this), could the previously increased deck height that was improperly compensated for by correcting the rocker shaft height have heated up the heads and caused my guide to come loose?

Not very likely. Anomalies are the more likely culprit, a short hot day freeway run with a horrible fuel mixture, a bunch of crap blocking cylinder fins at the valve guide area, poor guide installation, poor guide material, etc. The photograph of the head did not suggest that you had a chronic overheating condition that engine geometry would cause.

Engine went in yesterday afternoon, and the Scirocco is parked in front of my house this morning, so I'm guessing everything went okay...

He drove it home. Smooth.
Type4 bottom end is almost exactly the same as type1, interesting. Top end seems a lot more convoluted but maybe that's just because I'm set in my ways.
Time to build a roof rack!

You love my crack & you know it. Diminished Glute Sufferers UNITE!

Ride home was smooth as hell! Better than it has been in a long time. Almost as good as the day I built it! Even the clutch operates more smoothly.

Bob,

Forgot my pistons last night when I came & got the rest of my crap. I'll pick em' up tomorrow and clean up your tools too.

Hal,

Thanks for letting me use the car. Life would have been very difficult without it. I was going to wash it before returning it but it was too damn late and I didn't want to make my ride wait around. I'll buy you & Bob a few Super Duper Dog's tomorrow!

Wow!! That was quick!! Seems like only a couple weeks ago we were at the lab trying to figure out what was going on. Were you happy with the work traftons did for you?

They were quick, cheap and seemed to be thorough. I wish they had a welder who could have filled in the nooks & crannies a little better but aside from that I'm happy.

I am having one issue. The Bus is running great but my heads heat up very quickly when going up a 20* or greater incline (according to the VDO CHT). More so than usual. I'll play with the mixture and see if that helps.

Forgot to document the build. Here we go.

Put the 1/2 side together on Wednesday. Took Thursday off.

On Friday I started to do the 3/4 side and noticed the arrow on the top of the cylinder. Dammit! I forgot to check the piston orientation on the 1/2 side. Pulled the head and sure enough #1 was pointing the wrong way. Couldn't get it off without pulling #2 so had to redo that. At the end of the day (around 11PM) We were about to take the engine off the stand and put it on the jack. Bob asks if there any under the engine tin I need to put on before we take it down and I realize I forgot to install the under cylinder tin! In frustration I called it a night.

Saturday morning I arrive at 10AM full of vigor and anticipation. Pull the rockers, pushrods & tubes so I can install that damn cylinder tin. Bob shows up just in time to help me put it on the jack (he wasn't supposed to be there today). Then Ryan shows up because I had asked him to help me move the engine and he didn't get my message that Bob had helped me. Sorry Ryan. In install my new front main seal and flywheel o-ring, check my end play, then I finish putting on the all the tin, intakes, etc.... Then Hal shows up and helps install the engine. That went pretty smoothly. As did the rest of the day. Then we went to lunch and I had some pretty good Chicken Teriyaki. Spent the rest of the day putting all the little odds & ends back together. Ryan spent several hours down the street at his son's house waiting to ride me back from dropping off Hal's car. Sorry Ryan. He showed up around 9PM and watched me finish reconnecting wires while he and Bob made comments about my crack. Started her up and she smoked a lot. Scared me for a second until Bob reminded me of all the oil still sitting in the heater box & muffler. Ryan & I dropped off Hal's Scirocco and went to Subway before heading back to Bob's to grab the last of my stuff. My 14 hour day ended at midnight when the Bus & I arrived home.

Bus has been running GREAT! smooth as hell and very responsive. Even the clutch is smoother. Not a drop of oil is leaking form anywhere! The only issue the heating up on inclines.

According to the VDO It's getting up to 490* on a steep incline. Average highway temps are about 375*. I know VDO's are inaccurate but my average uphill temp before was around 450*. I have a temp gun but by the time I pull over and get under there the temps have already dropped. I need someone to hang under the Bus spy style while driving and get an accurate reading.

You do have tighter compression now since you lapped the cylinders. Also, the DH is different. Maybe it just needs to settle in. There will be a new "usual" now.
Maybe do a nice hard run, then go check the engine with your senses. They will tell you if it's running too hot. Who knows, maybe it was "too cool" before.
