Bear witness to the catastrophe!

Bus on it's way to Hamster's.

3/4 side of exhaust covered with oil.

3/4 Heater box covered with oil.

The results of dropping an engine off a jack. I forgot the fuel line ran through the tin and the engine hung on it. It looked like the engine was balanced on the jack but when I cut the line the engine hit the ground. Luckily it landed on the stud and rested on a piece of wood. Tom at Halsey replaced it for free. Notice all the oil from my leaky main seal.
Image

Dirty 3/4 side of head.
Image

Hammered #4 & dirty #3. Notice the brass chunks embedded in the head. Didn't sound like this was happening. Everyone at the lab heard it and it sound like one cylinder wasn't firing. But nothing that would indicate this! Also had a broken ring.

Cylinder side just as bad.

We all went to a local bar after, had a meal and some booze.

So I got a new set of Mahle P&C's. Having trouble getting the heads done. Halsey is trying out a place called Central Cylinder Head but they can't vouch for them yet. I brought him my head yesterday and he said it would be ready by Tuesday. Talked to him this morning and he said it can't be fixed. He said the valve guide bore has widened. I asked if he could just put the next size up in the and he said that would require machine work and he can't do that. Now I need another place to check out my heads. I'll be heading to Hal's later to check out a set that he offered up.

Brutal. That's just painful to look at. Your seal looks hella better than mine did.

Valve guide.

Hal generously gave me a used but in good condition set of P&Cs (I'll return the new ones) and a head in good shape as well as the use of a very peppy Scirocco. Need to see if the head matches my spare or find a match.

Hal & Bob are great friends. Few people would offer up this much without asking for or accepting anything in return. I'm very lucky. :king:

Yours was munched. Can't figure out what's up with my seal. It looks fine. Maybe it's too far up? Lot's of shiny that far up on the flywheel hub.

Better on the flat than on the shoulder which is what did mine in.

A valve guide hammered the piston? How does that work. Not a carbon buildup?

At least it looks confined to the top end. P&Cs, heads rebuilt...be OK then, no?

Piece of the valve guide broke off and entered the combustion chamber.

Should be. Bottom end is in great shape.

See, when part of the valve guide loves a piston very very much, it breaks away from the rest of the valve guide and sneaks downstairs into the cylinder and....
