Itinerant Air-Cooled

Any local Portland guys have one of these I can borrow? I need to replace the starter bushing and really don't have the means to pull the motor to tap it out right now.

I had a shop do it years ago with the engine in place (Beetle), you sure it can't be done? Not sure myself...

Yeah I had an appointment with Halsey today but canceled it because I'm just gonna order the tool I need. That way I have it in case anyone else needs it. It's stuck in there so I can't pull it out with my finger and my easy out is a little too small to grab hold of it.

Plus they wouldn't tell me how much it would cost and I don't want to dicker around.

I have another starter over at the barn and so we're going over there today to see it it's one of those auto-stick ones that bypass the bushing.

Got it out!

I used the bolt of a tie rod remover tool to get that bushing out.

Looks like this:



It fit into the starter bushing perfectly and the soft metal of the bushing was no match for the bolt. After I got it in good 'n snug I used pliers to pull it out.

Easy!

THe new starter bushing that came with the car was too big to fit in the hole so I had to cruise over to Discount Import Parts in Beaverton to pick up the proper bushing. I pushed it in flush, assembled, and she fired right up!



I think I have a 6 volt starter and the PO did some grinding around where it mates up to the bellhousing for clearance fitting. I looked at the flywhere and did not see much wear, same with the starter gear. But it does whine a little when I start it up.

Next time Harbor Freight. Blind hole puller.
