So, what's the consensus? Is it worth the extra $ to go NOS or are rebuilts just as reliable?

vs.

I'd rather sink the dough than be dropping the engine sooner. But I don't wanna spend the money if it won't be getting me much further.

Hal is the man to ask here...

NOS is nice for sure, and that price actually matches what tristessa was looking at for price over the summer - 250 for a good head, 500 for the pair.

I agree, price seems fair for what they are. Just trying to make sure that what they are is what I need!

I bought an emergency AutoLinea head to keep the Squareback moving two years ago. The cooling fins were entirely blocked by flashing from a lousy casting process. The machinist who fixed my OEM German head said the density of the OEM German was far superior to the Brazilian VW and the Brazilian VW was far superior to the AutoLinea.

You can make anything work, depending on your needs. Get the best quality you can find/afford, particularly if it is in a bus application.

A rebuilt OEM German head may have the better metallurgy, but did some machinist screw up the valve guide bores? or grind the seats non-concentric? or slap an exhaust stud in funky? Are the plug threads beat?

I'd pay the new VW Brazilian head price, but get an iron-clad assurance that you have the right of refusal at delivery after a careful inspection.

That seller won't agree to a return-if-not-as-described-upon-receipt policy. Guess I'll keep looking. Anybody got any proven sources for single port stuff?

I plan on breakin the bank on the heads im BOTH of my VDubs (Type1 & 4) It seems everywhere I read it's usually a head related issue. I've decided to pay the bucks to send my type 4 heads to Len Hoffman. Although not cheap, I beleive it will definatley be worth it in the long run.

I'd recommend Len also, but whoever you end up going with, the heads aren't the place to skimp when it comes to your engine.

Some of Len's work.

Performance Workshop
9000 Arlington Avenue Suite 111
Riverside CA 92503
(951) 689-7475

Did the original head on my Squareback for $55.00 to replace valve seat.
Did the heads in Oregon72's fresh rebuild.
Did my spare set of 1800 heads.
Does a great deal of high performance Type 1 work.
Personable, not too egotistical, workers appear to respect and get along with him which does not happen at every shop.
