I have a guy in chitwn if anyone is interested, 100 buck, maybe a little more per head, he is a few years from retirement, so I am stocking up.

If they can't build your confidence, they have no business building your engine.

That's what I figgerd. I shot an email out to these guys:

http://www.aircooledengineering.com/

Heard good things about them; anyone else? I'm kicking myself for not getting further into this engine sooner (earlier this past winter). Kept putting it off because we were knee-deep in sawdust in our walk-up attic. I certainly would have had more time for decision making though.

I'd still like to keep the option of me building it up open. But for timeliness I want to send some feelers out to reputable builders. I guess I could always borrow the Beetle engine to salvage camping season if timelines grow too long.

I'm also worried about this impacting my IAC visit budget. Let's see where this goes.

Type 1 heads seem plentiful. Don't overthink (or overspend) this.

I agree. That's why I ended up buying the new heads. Now I have new heads but a crapped out lower end. ACE said they'd be willing to build me up a long block if I send them my heads. Seems fair.

Headflowmasters sells long/short blocks for very reasonable. I almost went with them but decided to do it myself with a new case. I'd do it again.

Is there any reason you would not rebuild your own short block?
Send the case out for a rebore, stick in some oversize bearings, slap in new connecting rod and camshaft bearings, and guess what? No more surprises.

I'm just leery of reusing anything from this engine given the crappy work that has been done on it. I've contemplated it though, but as I mentioned I would want to measure everything and make sure it hasn't already been bored too many times. I'm not ruling anything out at this point. Maybe even a new case? $$

Is that a 080 stamped on the case above the seal on the right side?....I'm not sure what the max allowed for align bore is but if that is indeed the marking, I'd say you're near the top end of that tolerance.

It's looks more like either a backwards/upsidedown 090 or 060 - my gut tells me not to reuse the case.

If you loooooove your bus and neeeeeeever want to get rid of it, don't waste your time with magnesium. Get an aluminum AS41 (?).

Case split. Here are some more photos just for documentation and posterity. Someone out there may find this useful. These are my 'first pass' observations. Anything else I should be cluing in on or looking for specifically?

#3 Bearing Saddle - what's with the discolored area and marks near dowel pin?
Image

#2 Bearing - actually looks OK?
Image

#1 Bearing - Dowel pin looks undersized compared to hole in bearing
Image

Nice marks on the bearing ID - pretty sure this wouldn't have lasted much longer.

Any thoughts, comments, requests for other photos etc. greatly appreciated. I'm just trying to get the best education I can out of this deal.
