Pertronix Owners Please Read

Post by Amskeptic » Tue Sep 18, 2007 11:12 am

Please do me a favor before I contact Pertronix.

Please hook up your stroboscopic timing lights to CENTER coil wire. It will flash at every spark. Look at the pulley and you will see the 1/3 marks and the 2/4 marks flashing simultaneously. They should be perfectly overlaid. If you see a mark off to one side or the other, please read its timing on the scale. Then move your inductance clip to each spark plug wire until you see which individual cylinder deviates from the others.
I discovered my #2 is 3 degrees more advanced than the others. This is not acceptable. The plastic trigger deal that fits over the breaker cam has embedded magnets and apparently one of them is a bit off. Poor #2, the Type 4 problem cylinder too. I shall re-fit the trigger thingy 90* and let #1 take the load for a while. . . .

Yep. Now I have the 3* over-advance on #3 because it has the lowest compresion of the bunch. I will contact Pertronix and ask them with my New York tact, "heywhatdaheckwiddatyoukiddingme?"

I just got a timing light that has red and black clips like when jump starting. I think the manual said connect to battery and use the wire clip on #1. Do I need to disconnect anything and can I have the motor running before connecting?

No need to disconnect anything, just clip those on the battery and the pick up on the plug wire and you are good to go.

I connect the inductive pick up close to the cap myself.

Randy, Got Pertronix? Put inductance pick up on center coil wire, are your 1/3and2/4timing marks lined up evenly? I had a split on my 1/3 mark, it appeared to be flashing at two places simultaneously, 3* apart.

SVDA Distributor?

Post by westy78socal » Sat Oct 20, 2007 1:22 pm

Just wondering what the thought was in here. I'm running on a pertronix and wondering if this might be a better option?

What is your question? You can get a Pertronix or a Compufire that is designed to fit a vacuum-equipped distributor.

Which do you think is better in terms of engine heat and gas mileage?

No question here, you want a vac advance if you want cool temps and gas milage....

You have given me two options that don't compare.
It is not a question of Pertronix vs SVDA.
You can have a SVDA with points or Pertronix if you like.
You can have an 009 with points or Pertronix if you like.
Colin
(you will get slightly better gas mileage with a Pertronix vs points)
(you will get slightly better gas mileage and cooler running with a vacuum advance and centrifugal advance as found in a SVDA distributor)

Just tried this. Here are the results.

1. 7.5* BTDC
2. 7.5* BTDC
3. 6* BTDC
4. 4* BTDC

Pretty sad. Needless to say, I'll be going back to points tomorrow.

So far that makes 3 failed Hot Sparks, 1 failed Pertronix and 1 set of points that hasn't done me wrong yet. I guess I'll try Compufire next.

Wow. That is sloppy magnet/plastic casting or sumpin. Your timing marks must have been a fuzzy blur when you had the inductance pick-up on the center coil wire.

(at least your deviations were in a safer direction than my secret advance on 3)
