Re: shopping list for head replacement type IV
Busdepot has the engine gasket kit on backorder .... any other suggestions for a vendor that would carry a quality gasket kit?

Re: shopping list for head replacement type IV
This guys are local to me, were once air-cooled specialists but still carry some parts. Very reasonable prices and I think they ship:

Good tip, Tommu. I just compared their Pierburg fuel pump price to that of BD. Considerable savings. Perhaps Colin may be in need of one.

Ol Quarry Chewer seems to be hanging in there. I am going to free yours up if I can find any time. The schedule is now falling dominoes for the forseeable future, Wisconsin today, Illinois tomorrow, then Indiana then Illinois then Indiana then Kentucky then Indiana then Michigan, aw heck, you get the idea . . . Ohio.

When you make the Delhi stop, you're welcome to park, and rest at the cabin, and use the new outdoor shower. You'll probably need it, by then.

Re: shopping list for head replacement type IV
Well, we added a set of Mahle P's and C's. If anyone is interested, AutohuasAZ has them for $375ish and that includes free shipping. They arrived today. Packaging seemed suspect - bottom half of the box had come open, but the product appears okay (they were inside another box).
I don't know how companies can sell a reman type IV engine of any quality for $2k plus shipping. I realize I spent extra on the heads from Len, but I'm up to about $2400 just in parts, and that doesn't include any machining, main bearings, cam, pushrods, or lifters.

Re: shopping list for head replacement type IV
Yeah...I spent $800 on my first top end rebuild, which lasted 700 miles ( due to cracked MOFOCO head and excessive end play). I added an additional $1200 for a complete build, which lasted just under 14k miles ( due to a receding valve in an AVP head) ...now I am in $1900 for the heads and seals for this head replacement. I think overall I could have saved $800 by doing a complete build in the beginning with Len's heads. Ignorance is expensive...

Re: shopping list for head replacement type IV
Just got my new 914 2.0L heads from Len with the special coating in the combustion chamber and exhaust ports to keep it cool. I would do this for a bus too to keep temps down in the heads.

Sealant for under the washers in the valve rocker area. Tune Up items, while it is out plugs are a snap., good time for compression check, b4 and after.

Hylomar is fantastic stuff but a bear to remove. I used curil on the case washers and curil T on the head rockers in the rocker area.

Re: shopping list for head replacement type IV
Curil T also washes off with GumOut, as I learned on the road in 2016. Curil T, however, will not seal your cylinders to the case if there is dog hair in the joint, as I learned on the road in 2016.
Plus Curil smells better.
