External Oil Coolers

Post by whc03grady » Wed Sep 10, 2014 10:09 pm

Someone in an earlier thread offered a thought about external oil coolers that's consonant with mine, viz. that it's just more places for oil to leak. But that thread dealt with Type I mills. What about Type IVs? Is there anything else? Does it strain the pump, or require a bigger one? What about dipstick readings?
I'm asking because a friend just bought an '82 Westy and it has one.
Ludwig--1974 Westfalia, 2.0L (GD035193), Solex 34PDSIT-2/3 carburetors.
Gertie--1971 Squareback, 1600cc with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection from a '72 (E brain).
Read about their adventures:

External oil coolers on a Type 4 engine are nothing more than Marketing.
I say, take it off. Take it all off. While I watch.
