Stripped Oil Drain Threads - Type4
I have a friend who has a stripped out oil drain plug on his late type4 engine. So whattya do? Helicoil? Bigger bolt?
How do you keep the metal shavings outa the case?
Yikes I say.
Type 1 of course you just buy a new strainer plate...

Re: Stripped Oil Drain Threads - Type4
Helicoils are craptastic and are under no circumstance built for high-torque applications.
Proper repair will use taps either way, and you will have to deal with metal shavings either way.
Option 1: Re-tapping the hole to a larger diameter. Probably you better bet in this particular case.
Option 2: Using a Time-Sert. Time-Serts require a drill, counter-sink, tap, insertion, and a finishing thread. Lots of extra hardware.
A Time-Sert in this case is probably overkill, as you do not have to retain original bolt size. When I redid the valve-cover threads for my Civic, they were necessary.

Re: Stripped Oil Drain Threads - Type4
Tap with lots of grease. Now waste a couple of quarts of oil as a rinse. Say a prayer of thanks for oil filter that comes with Type 4 engines.

Thank you! You guys have any recommendation for the new thread size?
Is the type4 "strainer plate" made of steel?

Re: Stripped Oil Drain Threads - Type4
I've done a buncha type4 and water boxer drain plugs. As said, greasy tap, patience, and some extra oil to "flush". I prefer Timesert to just a step-up, because it's stronger and less likely to strip again, but it is pretty $$$ for the kit if one can't be borrowed somehow.
You aren't getting confused between the type1 and type4 in regards to the strainer plate, are ya Hammy? Type4 drain is tapped straight into the case.

First strip out, OK, a stupid error. Second strip out, you deserve what you get.DjEep wrote:I've done a buncha type4 and water boxer drain plugs. I like your style, Colin. I'm just so used to dealing with people who wouldn't know the difference between a foot-pound and a football. (Not implying that anyone here wouldn't, just the opposite in fact.)

Re: Stripped Oil Drain Threads - Type4
Check out Ratwell's FAQ, section 1.18 for some info on the type IV oil drain plug. If yours is the original M12x1.5, then you ought to be able to step up to the oversize M14x1.5.hambone wrote:Thank you! You guys have any recommendation for the new thread size?
