New Type 1 Cases

Post by hambone » Wed Nov 20, 2013 12:59 pm

Word has it that the old reliable Brazil type1 cases are becoming harder to find. Locally, the parts shop can get them for $900 (their cost!) Just a couple of years ago I paid $600 for a new case.
Just thought I'd put that out there and see if anyone knows anything about this. With the 100000000000000 Mexi-etc VWs running around all over the 3rd world I can't imagine that demand for engines will go down anytime soon.

How about the aluminum Type 1 cases, where do you get them?

Thank-you, Hambone.

I think I will start saving up for an aluminum case.
I will, you know I will, razorblade the saddles and freshen the casting flash, hand-fit the distributor drive shaft, index its oiling hole, open up front main seal drain hole, and drive the living snot out of it if I can get one with those fine Type 4 main bearings . . .

20 pound penalty! I can deal with that! I'll just put the rear toolbox on the front floorboard.

The aluminum cases seem like the way to go now. Hopefully they will hold up as well as type4 cases.
The great benefit of the magnesium cases was their affordability. They hold up pretty well, but seem to get pretty pounded after many miles.

On a cost-per-mile basis, affordable magnesium is too expensive for me.
I need to find a case that can deal with my sustained highway rpm habit.
Chloe's engine seems happy right now, but I can hear the crankshaft bores opening up like they did with the Road Warrior.
End play has already been reset, but will be due again before next season.
Aluminum . . . when the time is right.
