Yep, the thermostat let go so I swapped in my last spare. Now to find another one or buy one of those brand new ones for big $$$. It was fun laying on the cold ground to do the swap in 28F weather....I really miss summer now.

Let us know if that increases your head temps in the cold.

Every little bit helps. It improves your heater performance too, but try retarding the timing a good 5* and jacking up the idle to compensate . . . that'll help keep the pipes hot, yessiree.

Wayne's bus didn't even hit 300F today in 18F weather so I think the cold air really keeps the CHT's down. My heat is pretty good but the gas heater is the solution to really good heat in a bus in really cold weather.

Is his thermostat functional?

I have done only modestly cold driving Since I Became Aware, and did not have a worthwhile CHT gauge driving through Texas hovering at the freezing mark. My oil temps never hit 200, and that is a problem for water contamination reasons.

Back in 1980, I drove across the country in the Road Warrior in the winter with no problems, no gauges, and no heat after Chicago . . . but the oil cap was gross.

Yes, CB has a good working thermostat but no oil temp gauge. Wayne watched and reported the CHT temps just to see how hot it got in the 18F weather.
The inside of the bus never really warmed up but it was only a 30 minute drive to the Xmas tree farm. So maybe the cooler air also has an effect on the exhaust temps so you don't get as much heat out of the heat exchangers to heat the cabin. Lower CHT's equals lower exhaust temps equals not enough heat!
I had forgotten how much and nice it is to ride in the back seat of a bus! With the big windows, sitting up high you really have a great view. CB has a good suspension too so none of that tossing around that I have had in other older buses that makes you seasick.
Hopefully today we'll take the Beetle vert out for a drive and in the future I'll bring the Ghia down so we can race our certs! No, just kidding but we want to compare them as the Ghia is old school suspension and carb'd vs the newer Super Beetle with FI.
