Stripped Spark Plug Threads

Post by vwlover77 » Sat Oct 05, 2013 11:36 am

I'm feeling like a complete idiot because I just stripped the spark plug threads in cylinder #4 on my Bus.

I believe a Time-sert is considered the best repair option.

Does anyone have the repair kit to rent or borrow? They are expensive!

I went with this one from Autozone. $30. I liked it because it has a solid insert with knurls on the top threads that are staked in place with the swage tool provided. But, like a helicoil, the plug seats on the head, not the top of the insert. I was surprised that the instructions specified High-temp RTV for the insert threads instead of Loctite. At any rate, the repair is complete and the Bus runs again!
