Bus Rims Circle vs Patterned Centers?

The center bore is perfectly round in the second one. There is also a difference in how well defined those little bumps are around the inner circle.


Was there a particular year they switched to using one Vs the other?

I've never seen the one on the top before. I'm interested to learn where it came from. Don't tire balancing shops prefer the centric hole for easy of mounting?

The one on the top is the one fitted to every perforated disk wheel Volkswagen bus/Vanagon I have ever seen, save for some owner's manuals tire change pictures . . . .

All five of my '71 bus wheels have the perfectly round holes. I feel lucky.

The one in the picture is date stamped 5/76.

Thus far it seems the only thing we know for sure is that we don't know. =) More to come?

My 71's are all stamped 71 as well. I have a couple of the later style mixed in on one bus. Not sure what year the change over was.
