1st pump = manual brakes, 2nd pump = power brakes

Post by TrollFromDownBelow » Mon Oct 20, 2008 12:19 pm

Have a 77 westy, and as the subject line reads: 1st pump feels like manual brakes, 2nd pump feels like power brakes. Brake pedal doesn't feel soft ... don't think it's a master cylinder issue; feels more like the power assist isn't asisting.

What are likely causes, where should I start the diagnosis?

How did it develop? Slowly or all of a sudden? Did you recently install a check valve backwards?

oops ... I have a 76 ... not a 77 :). Haven't installed any check valves. not sure if it is all of a sudden, or think it's simply that I just noticed it.

It is a weird symptom. Check check valve. And we need to develop our forum skill set to include booster rebuilding.

I am not sure the general public can buy the internal parts. Hard to beat the price when H & R in Texas rebuilds them for around $85 for one day service.

Karl you are a wealth of incredible information! Thank you even tho I don't need a booster. (kind of like those old VW ads with all the parts you don't need laid out, radiator driveshaft etc. Ironic eh?)

They are a good source, but for those of us who are deeply appreciative of the engineering of fine parts such as our boosters, it sure would be nice to knock out our own rebuilds. I have done one, I was marvelling at how simple yet precise these things are. I love the control valves, they are art.

FWIW - I done figgered it out. Had some leaky rear wheel cylinders. Replaced those, had the drums turned (they were scored pretty bad) put some new shoes on her - and viola! No more double pumping. She always stopped well, no she stops even gooder :geek: Parking brake now only comes out about an inch or so ... like it should.

Gotta admit, these are the easiest drum brakes I've ever done ... just assemble everything first, and then plop the whole assembly in. Very elegant in it simplicity. Only thing I'm not fond of is having two adjusters per side.

Oh stop it. You LIKE having something to do while you nap under the bus.

It's now $150...at least when I called last month. Still worth it though!

Ours is on it's way back to us, hopefully here tomorrow!

Charged $100 plus $14 for UPS shipping.

Better than BusDepot's rebuilt for $189 and certainly better than new!
