Beetle clutch cable hookup problem

Post by Psucamper » Sun Sep 08, 2013 3:54 pm

I am currently replacing the entire pedal cluster (brand new OG!!). But every time I think the hook/ cable eye are mated inside the tunnel, they part. Tried thin wires to secure them together but no go. Tried various sticky tapes...no go. Spending way too much time on a simple job. Frustration is setting in. Is there something special that needs to be done pre install? Job is dead in water till i get this resolved. Your thoughts appreciated.

I had a spare set of hands in the rear pulling lightly (taut?) while installing..

Sometimes you just need to walk away, it usually falls together after a couple of hours.

Thank you sir. However,at the moment I have only two hands with qualified VW help a week away. I will persist alone for a while. Why do my neighbors look in,smile, shake their heads and walk away chuckling?

Enlist one of the chucklers for the extra pair of hands.

It is a very irritating process. Hang in there. Your hands are probably already bleeding.
It does help to have a bit of tension on the cable. Adjust it a bit at the trans. end of things.
$#$%(%#( with it 1,000 times and eventually it will work.

Install wing nut on cable at transaxle. This will preload the cable enough for your painful engagement of hook to eye to hold together.

Colin. It worked! Sticky tape + pre-load + minor bleeding. Cluster in and functional. Set master cylinder pushrod to give 1mm at m/c interface. Thanks to all for helping.
