Brake chatter

Post by 72Hardtop » Mon Oct 10, 2011 1:08 pm

I resolved the issue of the brakes pulling but now I'm hearing a bit of chatter from what appears to be the passenger side. I've removed the tire and from what I can see the pads seem to have some movement in them when rotating the rotor. Cruising down the road i can hear a subtle clicking or ticking noise and if I barely press the brake it goes away. Let off and it starts up again. I start to hear it at roughly 20mph.

You can try to erase the chatter with a thorough sanding of the disks after you pull the pads. 45* cross-hatch outside and inside surfaces, thorough, wipe down with carb spray and paper towel, do it again. If the chatter, pulsation really, returns, then you may need to turn or replace disks.

Well I cheated a bit and used a very small amount of Disc brake quiet on the back of the pads and the end of the pins. To my surprise no more noise... absolutely quiet.

So "chatter" was actually "squealing" or "groaning" and not pulsing or vibration?

(I will delete my above reply if we were on different pages as far as "chatter")

No, the noise I was hearing was of of subtle click/ticking noise with speed from the right front wheel. After pulling the wheel off I could rock the rotor back & forth and see the pads moving as well as the end of the pin on the lower side. The end of the lower pin (outer) would wobble around and make noise as did the pads (top & bottom portions against the caliper). No screeching, squealing or grinding noise of any kind.

Achh, what to do ....? Disc brake quiet is like Engine Overhaul In A Can.
I have questions like:
Pads are not supposed to have any movement in the direction of rotation.
Pins are supposed to be solidly pinched in the holes and springloaded under the spreader spring (looks like a metal butterfly, see Bentley). Disc Brake Quiet does a good job o ripping your caliper's piston dust boots to shreds the next time you remove the pads. Do you have the pad shims, the metal plates that are exactly the same size as the pads themselves that go between the pads and pistons to orient the pistons?
