Check Your Fire Extinguisher

Post by Amskeptic » Sun Dec 03, 2017 6:58 pm

if it has a cheesy plastic handle and is made by Kidde, free replacement:

A massive recall was issued Thursday of 37.8 million fire extinguishers sold across the United States and an additional 2.7 million sold in Canada because they have repeatedly fail to work properly, if at all.

Kidde, the manufacturer, said it was aware of one death related to the extinguishers. That occurred in 2014 when emergency responders could not get the extinguishers to work at the scene of a blazing car crash.

The company said it was aware of 391 cases in which the extinguishers were reported to have failed to activate, activated only in a limited capacity, or had the nozzle detach. The extinguishers have been involved in 91 reports of property damage and more than a dozen reported injuries, including minor burns and smoke inhalation.

You can call Kidde at 855-271-0773 or visit the Kidde website, where you can fill out a form to get a new unit.

Kidde says it will ship the replacement within 10 to 15 days of getting your information. No receipt is required.

I have three of the little plastic handled wretches, but they are all in Atlanta. The red plastic handles have bleached pinkish due to my great love of strong sunlight. Two of them lost their charges over time, all since 2011.

Neither of mine are affected by the recall. I carry a 2 pound and a 3 pound, both by Kidde. The 3lb unit says it was manufactured in 08 and I couldn't find a date on the 2lb but it's probably about the same age. Both show "full" in the green area on the gauge. It says to replace after 12 years of service, I suppose I'm alright until 2020 as long as they hold charge.

I bought new ones yesterday. Expensive, but in my life I have saved one car, a Grand Wagoneer of mine, and a tractor on a church lawn, as I was driving by. I should have let the Wagoneer go up.

What size did you buy and where from? Why so expensive? And what did that poor Jeep ever do to you?

As this post has been bumped, I realized that I did not answer your questions. I bought them at Home Depot, I think. They were Kidde’s, several 3 pounders and 2 of the next size up, whatever that is. They are placed around the barn, and in cars, and two in the house. Regarding the “Heep”, which is what my friends ended up calling the Grand Wagoneer, it was the second worst vehicle I have ever had personal experience with-the winner, by far, being a Peugeot 504 sedan, that came into the marriage with my wife. The French need to stick to wine, and cooking. The Heep caught on fire, in front of my house, one afternoon after I got home from work. My daughter came to me as I was changing out of my work clothes, and said, “Dad, you might want to take a look at your car. Smoke is coming out of it.” I ran to the front of the house. I should have played the lottery that day, because as I went tearing out the door, a Metro Dade fire truck was pulling into my yard. They just happened to be driving by, and saw the black smoke billowing out from under the hood. I popped the hood, and we were greeted by a burst of flame when we opened it up. They had it extinguished in about 10 seconds. The PLASTIC valve cover was, of course, melted. An expensive dealer item, there were no metal ones available for the engine. I had already bought one, as they also tended to crack and then, leak oil. I thanked the firemen, and my daughter, and the next day I bought a fire extinguisher for the car. The 4 wheel drive never worked at all. By the time I discovered that, I was not going to put more money in the car. The emissions contrivances on the car were developed by a deranged person. No mechanic I knew could figure out the series of metal tubes and hoses running about. The trim was cheesy. The one good thing in the car were the leather seats. They were very comfortable, as I guess Jeep figured their customers might be sitting in them a lot, stranded, perhaps, in Crankshaft Junction, Death Valley. The air conditioning was a constant problem. The nylon belts that drove the window mechanisms up and down were always breaking. At the time the belts were about 14 bucks each, but the labor involved was crazy. It would take me several hours to replace one. I finally just left the interior door panels loose. The rear window fell down into the tailgate one day as I drove over a railroad track, making such a noise that I thought that I had been hit by a train. A drive chain in the transmission broke while I was coming home from work, stranding me. The repair was 1500 bucks, mostly labor, plus the tow. And, it did catch on fire, once again, and I put it out with my extinguisher, which was at hand. And that particular fire, while not melting the valve cover, caused it to warp, and then the oil leaks began anew. I bought another valve cover, and sold the car to a Jeep “enthusiast”, in my book, a bona fide mental case. Lest you think that I was driving a car that was already old, these events occurred in 1991-94. the Heep was a 1988 model year, and low mileage to boot. I bought it from a dentist who, as I recall, had a look of relief upon his countenance when we struck the deal. Much as I most likely did, when I sold it the the Jeep aficionado fellow. They discontinued the car in 1991. I was aware that they were also produced in Iran, of all places, which probably the reason they hate us so, over there. I know I would. Most of the run over there (1963-74), it was called the “Ahoo”, which, I believe, is Persian for “camel shit”. A big reason why I bought the “Grand” Wagoneer is that while I was in my 20’s, I owned a 1950 Willys Overland station wagon, a car that was as tough as nails. I drove that car all over the place, and really consider it the first SUV. It was 4 cylinder, three on the tree, with overdrive. Everything worked flawlessly. I took road trips in it, and slept on a mattress I set up on the fold down rear seats. That Jeep product was about the best car I ever owned, other than my 10 year old Toyota Sequoia that I have today. But, as they say, you can’t go home again. Damn good thing I own a VW bus.

I did not answer your questions.

A) Home Depot, I think. Kidde’s, several 3 pounders and 2 of the next size up,

B) the winner, by far, a Peugeot 504 sedan, that came into the marriage with my wife.

C) The Heep caught on fire, in front of my house, one afternoon

a) Thank-you.

b) how DARE you. I loved those beautifully turned out 504's with their winsome "rub the mirrors off" cornering that nonetheless hung on, hemi-head 1800 engines, four wheel disc brakes, macpherson + trailing arm suspension like the BMWs, 111 mph top speed, but best of all, that handsome white headliner. So why was yours such a horror? I mean, I was giving your wife creative offbeat quality PROPS until your remark. Are you sure it was all about the car? :drunken: :blackeye:

c) A Willys is so very very very very not a Cheep Slammineer. My condolences.

d) you actually still like the Toyota after that ball joint defect imbroglio? My regard for Toyota/Lexus has plummeted exactly as far as JD Powers ranking (from #1 my Lexus LS400 to #15 modern Lexus line up)

I don't remember, but I sure liked that brown 504 that belonged to a customer of mine in LA back in the mid-80s.
It was handsome and she kept it clean. It was a clean machine.

I respect any engineering that exceeds expectations. (poor goat, by the way)

In fire extinguisher news, Kidde's phone # 855-262-3540, you do have to return your old one via a call tagged actual pick up from your UPS/Fed-Ex driver, something about "hazardous".
