82 Westfalia - terrible grinding after high RPM in 2nd gear

Post by evenstarjm » Sun Sep 08, 2013 8:18 am

I use 2nd gear to give the girl a boost on hills and forgot to shift to drive. When approaching the nearest light and slowing down, I heard a terrible grinding noise when I removed my acceleration. It happens only w/o acceleration and sitting in idle. I had driven only 6 miles, going about 65 miles/hr. What have I done to my girl?

I am assuming that this is an automatic transmission. Take it in to a shop that is kind to old Volkswagens. We might be dealing with a sheared oil pump driveshaft.
