The AFM wiper spring apparently reacts to certain tires' dynamic wind-up/release under the torque of acceleration.

Don, I remember very well the relief I felt the day I removed those hated factory-supplied Continentals from my Vanagon in 1990 and enjoyed my first smooth run through the gears in ages.
