Ok, here is a 72 914 1.7L which is the exact same engine and Djet. Minor differences in the wiring and tin but so what. I the right upper corner is the ECU, below it is MPS, and below that under the car is the fuel pump, across the car is the relay board so pull all those items along with everything on top of the engine. It all comes off pretty easy with PBBlaster sprayed on the nuts and bolts.
Yes, this is an original low mileage show winner engine bay but it gives a good shot at the FI and how it came from the Factory.

Wow, that engine compartment is better than on the showroom floor in 1973. Thanks for the pic, this should give anyone that needs a "show me" the tools to works with.

Hey Sped372, I hope you get some time to take a look at the 412 - I don't suppose its going anywhere to soon. Anyway, let me know what you find, Thanks. =D>

I'd deduct originality points for that non-original blue coil... :blackeye:

Hotshot, I've got the complete D-Jetronic system from a '71 411 if part numbers are needed .. and I'm not too far from yer shop, live down near I-205 & Johnson Creek. None of the bits are for sale except a set of 1.7L injectors, gonna be using it in my '70 Fastback when the T4 2L gets finished & installed .. someday.

So I made it out to the yard today, and well, wouldn't you know it the beast was still there. It has deteriorated since my last visit courtesy of a broken windshield (what is with some people?) but still looks pretty complete to me, especially for the midwest. There's a large dent in the roof and the body is probably not worth saving, but compared to the vulture picked bugs and buses this thing looks to have parts left to give.

The unfortunate thing is, I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to later engines, fuel injection especially. Again, the thing looks complete and un-hacked to my untrained eye, but I don't know what a "complete fuel injection system" is comprised of. I wouldn't want to pull 95% of it only to leave one vital component behind.

Still, I hate watching things go to waste and thought I'd at least talk to the guys in the office. Apparently they don't pull and ship things for folks. I asked how much for the "complete fuel injection system" off the Type 4 out there and just got a blank stare. He actually tried typing some stuff into his system and came back with, there is no such thing as a Volkswagen Type 4. I assured him there was and he in fact had one on his lot. After some back-and-forth I got some off-the-cuff $400 quote and the guy pretty much didn't want to deal with me. Seems pretty high to me, especially when they don't even know what the car is or what all is included in the system. I have no idea what the fair value would be. I'm not interested in pawning it or making a profit. I'd just like to help someone get back on the road and prevent those parts from returning to mother nature before their rightful time.

Some stealth shots (cameras verboten on the lot):

So now what hotshot (name, not snarky remark)? If you're really eager and it's worth it and you or someone else can give a thorough description of what parts need to be yanked and my work schedule allows me to break away again....

$400 is absurd.
ok, the grenade silver looking thingie with the yellow dot is the MPS which IF it hold a vacuum of 15hg is worth $100-200
the rubber thottlebody to air cleaner hose is worth $ if its not cracked to sh*t
Looks like it had new vacuum hoses on it not to long ago by looking at it. The ECU is behind a panel I think- $100
Can't see the bellows to the air fan intake its worth $
and the special front tin.
Dizzy is worth a few bucks
I pay $100 for complete 1.7 djet FI
the engine should be a 80hp model

I could use the cold-start valve. On the end of the plenum (black thing in the middle of the engine) near the distributor, has a fuel line connected to both sides...

That's probably its value as scrap metal.

Well guys, long time since I have posted but I am leaving Saturday 5-29-10 to rescue an abandoned 411 in the Bend / Redmond area. Thanks to justgimmecoffee, I am very grateful for all who have pointed me in the direction to pick up some of these forgotten jewels. :geek:

I will get pictures on this blog as soon as we get some sun in Portland - just hate using the flash on my camera during the day!!! Special thanks to Steve - Sharon Hall and Satchmo for the Pullman experience. Very long trip but worth it.

[excuse=on] Absolutely. The engines are fully interchangeable plug-n-play. Amazingly, a bus is worth more without an engine, and, and, a 411/412 is worth much much more with a running engine and stuff.

There's a red 412 4-door for sale at a car lot on SE 82nd near SE Foster here in Portland, saw it there last week. Couldn't see a price on it though.
