Easy, according to my last changeout too many years ago.

Need to support engine at flywheel end with a chain and a 2 or 4x4. If a different transaxle is going in, make sure shift linkage is fresh and properly adjusted.

IIRC, the driveshafts can be removed just from the differential and hung up out of the way.
You own a 2008 Rabbit now? Whatever happened to the Golf?

I've never had a Golf. The 2.5 liter five cylinder Rabbit is essentially a Golf, but badged a Rabbit for a short run.

The transmission failure hit us at a critical point of crisis, that left no room for me to explore the options. Thus, the local dealer did the work. Invest 4k, or sell it to them for $500. We invested on a credit card, and realized we had to sell, because we didn't have the pockets for that kind of investment. But the family angel that "gave" us the car initially really wants us to keep it, and covered the costs of a new factory transmission installed by the dealer, and yes, new clutch. So we're keeping it.

Now normally, when I name a car, I favor alliterations. Joan Jetta. Linda LUV, Gretta and now Gretchen Ghia, Bertha Bus, Betty Baja, Ginger Geo, but that alliteration eluded me with the 2008 Rabbit. Roger wasn't cutting it. Then there's the familial pressure of the clan I have married into, the Easters, so it had to be Bunny Rabbit.

Bunny just rolled over 100k miles, and Ginger Geo just rolled over to 200k miles. And Bertha Bus is itching for Maupin.

I am itching for Maupin too. Like 2018, no real itinerary schedule, just get there.

Note to self -- arrange for multiple broken rigs to arrive on tow trucks at Maupin 2018. Preferably *with* spare parts on-hand...

Ah yes, memories:

We could have fun even without spare parts. There is a cafe with a kitchen just down the road with all number of interesting items. Mark won't mind.
