...how much better a 1647 dp runs with the proper spark plug and point gaps.

Mine was missing and just running like, well, not well at all. Bad enough I was getting concerned about making the 4 mile drive to work.

Finally weather, time, and flora factors came together and I was able to replace my spark plugs. Yep, pretty toasted. Gap was probably a good .036 inches. And check the dwell. Seventy is bad.

New oil and it's running like a brand spanking new engine. Whew.

I get nervous-nellie (sorry Nellie!) like too.
Who can tell in this day and age. Will parts quality or our own poor mechannicking fail us? Usually it's lots of fretting but things work out OK eventually. Wouldn't it be nice if an engine would just STAY PUT? Alas bits of metal are wearing off.

You never know, I may crack my wallet and invest in a new cap and rotor. But not until we start running poorly enough to set off my nellie concerns. I mean, I did polish up the edge of the rotor, and did some meticulous filing and cleaning on the cap contacts. Little itty bitty file, little itty bitty strokes, didn't get it gleaming, but much better than it was.

Bertha's perky. Can't wait to run the mountain road out of Amboy up to Dunnigan Mountain. Darn right feisty, contentious, ha! Much quicker than the cliche. No push starting needed.

I've also noticed that my carbs like to run 1/4 turn richer once the cold weather sets in. Then in the spring have to lean them out again.
The Beetle wouldn't idle right then I remembered the ol trick.

I always have to richen up my Harley by a good 1/2 to 3/4's turn to get it to run right (the braver/colder I am, the more I have to richen it).

My 76 FI vw always seems to have more 'spring in it's step' once the temp drops below 60 degrees ..... likes that cool dense air.
