Looks legit on the dealer's web site, despite the transmission type mistake....

https://porroautosales.com/inventory/29 ... gen-Dasher

I loved the '77 Dasher hatchback I used to have as a winter rat, but it was a gasoline model. It was that awful champagne edition silverish green. My wife called it the green weenie. Drove like a little Mercedes, with the big steering wheel to match!

Friggen grotesque inchworm guts green puke. The original German Dasher had a black dash, white/black visors, white headliner, and was enormously more attractive. But thanks for reminding me that the water-cooled VWs marched straight to cardboard-coated-with-plastic trash while the buses soldiered on with the old-school quality a while longer.

I had a black mark 2 GT Scirocco. It needed fuel injection, a bigger engine, more valves and better brakes - slow, heavy and unstoppable piece of lard that it was.

Yuck!

Guigaro Mark 1 dual headlamp single wiper Champagne white Scirocco with red Recaro seat accents was just about perfect.

I can't imagine $39,000.00 for it, but it could be me not keeping up with the market.

Oh boy, that is the problem with being attracted to nice cars. If I find the one and only shot of me at 21 in the white Scirocco, I will post it, but be ready for an unruly mop of hair and a thicket of a beard.

Colin, Would that photo be similar to this one? I'm 24 in this one, I think, with the first VW I ever bought brand-new - '83 GTI. (Please excuse the iPhone photo of a photo distortion.)

I think I will be a little more rustic. Did you *like* the Pennsylvania Volkswagens?

The GTI, yes. The rest, no. I loved the way the GTI drove, and surprisingly, the reliability and build quality was far better than the '77 German Rabbit my parents bought new. My '83 never needed anything but routine maintenance. The '77 was a very different story. The GM influence was still there in the GTI's rectangular headlights, goofy side marker lights, padded burgundy vinyl dash, and dashboard switchgear. But all that was forgotten when I was behind the wheel. Wish I'd never sold it......

Odd, this Universe. I loved loved my 1977 4-door brown 1600 CIS Rabbit with that handsome white headliner, brown leatherette, black dash, white/black visors first year of the improved shift gate, and my Rabbit had the most tantalizing engine sound, I loved it, a distinct low-key valve clatter and a perfect whirr/moan from the alternator that I ascribed to the gap between the fan and the alternator housing. It played in concert with a slight timing belt whirr, and I loved it. It drove lightly, precisely, handsomely.
Colin

Odd indeed...(And oh, how we have hijacked this thread! Moderator? Moderator! :salute: )

I also loved loved our Mars Red 1977 2-door 1600 CIS Rabbit with black leatherette. It was somewhat "GTI-ish" in the styling department with all black window seals (no chrome accents), painted steel bumpers, black stripes above the side moulding, and my addition of a black Kamei air dam in front. It became "my" car when I began a co-op college job in Washington, DC in 1980, although I commuted 50 miles round-trip daily to college in it starting in September of 1977. Like Shadowfax to Gandalf, it was my steadfast (and fast) companion through many adventures. Gifted to me after college, it was the car I traded in for the GTI (with 120K miles by then.)

I have a dream every few months or so... In it, I pull up to a storage unit, lift the overhead door, and there sits the '77 Rabbit (not the GTI!) in pristine condition, backed in, ready for another adventure. If only I could figure out where that storage unit is!

Here we are arriving from the cold northern climes to St. Petersburg Beach, FL, circa 1980....

Giugiaro did good with VW, too bad they lost so much quality. I like that little red Rabbit.
