'72 Bus - Engine - Oil Leak from Oil Fill

Post by Sluggo » Tue Sep 05, 2006 5:00 pm

I now only have one leak (that I know of). Where the oil fill plastic upper piece meets the metal tube. It is down all the way. Once I get warm and running oil leaks out then gets sucked into the fan and runs down and drips a little. Is there some kind of sealer I can put on there?

I think I may have found the culprit. I installed a PCV valve in the oil breather to help make my 90* turn (I'll explain when I make the page on my rebuild). Anyway, when I got this idea I went out and sucked on the valve. Took a lot of pressure before it released (and released a nice taste of oil and the gas that contaminated my engine earlier). Which means it wasn't opening for crank case ventilation! My theory is that since the PCV valve was not opening, the pressure needed a place to go. Since the air inside the engine is hot (hot air/oil/gas rises and expands), it escaped from the next highest leak point. Which would be the little, minute gap around the mateing surface of the oil fill tube and oil fill plastic dealy bobber ( I think that's the technical name). It seems okay now. I'll take a drive tomorrow and see what happens.

Man! It's hard to type when you've had a few. I started working at the Derby and we had a meeting tonight. They kept feeding me Rum & Coke. I'm not much of a drinker (more of a smoker). Nice to have a gig with perks. Free admission & drinks anytime.

I need to find me one of those. My only perk is free coffee.

Two websites. And I also make low budget Ska, Reggae & Punk videos. Luckily two of my jobs are kind of a just be available in emergencies situation. Gotta love Apartment Management.

This should be moved to Type 2 forum. We are keeping this area dry and specific.

As someone was mentioning (chitwnvw?) we need to pose the general questions in the vehicle forum, then only go to the technical forum suggested. I know this area is quiet and undeveloped so far, but we don't want to fill it with conversation.

It started out technical (somewhat). But then became kind of a conversation (my fault for talking about my job/s). I'll move it.

So speaking of PCV valves, I have never found them to agree with carb Type 4 engines.

I'm not surprised. It doesn't seem like it would put out enough pressure to open this valve at all. I've just got the hose crammed in the hole for the breather now (late style breather neccesary for my relocated dipstick). Gotta find something else to make that connection. Maybe I can hollow out the PCV valve.

I must have been right. Eliminated the PCV valve and put on a more secure and intact Oil Fill Plastic Dealy (what is the name of that individual part?). No more leak!
