just to toot my own horn - I just replaced the brake switches on my van and now for the first time in ages the brake lights work!!!

Congratulations. There is no better way to bond with your old VW than to take care of its little issues and be rewarded with the sound of the engine propelling you down the open road. . . and brake lights when you come to the end of it, of course.
