So is this a morbid idea?? (slightly VW related!)

Post by Marya70Riviera » Sun Jan 25, 2015 9:14 pm

The VW camper I inherited - which until very recently hadn't been driven in 21 years (!) - belonged to my beloved, super cool and very sweet grandpa. A little old norwegian buddhist beatnik kind of a guy, born in 1902 (died in '90). His ashes have been sitting, sadly, in a box at the family farm house for all this time. My grandma used to call him the "world's greatest escape artist" cause he was always taking off in that bus to do little errands here and there. He loved to escape the 3 dominating women he lived with (my grandma and her two sisters)! He loved to go on drives and also camp etc.

So what do you think of the idea of my getting one of these small container charms that hold some ashes and that are meant to be hung from a rearview mirror?!!!! They're usually meant for pets' ashes I think! Is that wrong of me? I mean...he had a sense of humor. I like the idea of him being sorta with me, getting to be in his beloved bus again and "seeing" the world again. Yeah, I sound nuts don't I? I'm not suggesting I need anyone's approval (especially a bunch of relative strangers!) but I'm still wondering what perspectives there are out there in this VW community.

I know there's always the chance that "he" could get smashed in an accident or even stolen. That's one concern I have - though I'd have to be okay with that possibility I guess.

Thanks!

p.s. here's a few examples of what I'm talking about:

Note that re. this first one, he really loved women, a lot ;)

This one reminds me of his sunshiny personality: http://www.evrmemories.com/round-mornin ... vr2251.htm

This one's so sweet but doesn't have a place for ashes - but I'll bet they have one that does even even if it doesn't show up on the site:

It sounds like he'd surely get a kick out of it. Do it.

Take him new places.

I had my buddies ashes go airborne off an e.30 m3 deck spoiler at just over the ton after the esses at watkins glen.
That he wanted Bridgehampton, a death bed wish was satisfied by movie car buddy John.Weiser.
So bring grand pa along, let him help you escape.

Thanks for the positive attitudes guys! :flower:

Now, a couple of weeks later, I feel morbid about it again. I guess when I drive it I feel his presence (for lack of a better word) so much that I don't know that I need his ashes in the cab to make that feeling any more real! But there's a heart-shaped rear view mirror pendant photo frame that would be perfect to put his picture in. I may just do that.

I think that this is a great idea too. In fact, I was thinking about having ashes made into a blown glass sun catcher. I was also thinking about a blown glass shifter nob, but I like the sun catcher idea better.
