Tig Weld T4 Exhaust Flange Collars

Post by 72Hardtop » Wed Jul 16, 2014 9:58 am

Here are a couple shots of the collars I tig welded where they were leaking. The #2 had the largest crack. 3-4 side did not appear to have any cracks that were noticeable via sight or sound but I tig welded them anyhow.

Now sanding and prepping for heat temp paint.

All back together and the bus runs and sounds great. Replaced all the exhaust copper rings and gaskets. Annealed the rings prior to install and used Loctite 518 as well. I'm running an S&S 4-1 header so I applied a very thin coat of Hi-temp copper on both sides of the flange gaskets to add to sealing ability/durability.

Also sanded and repainted the heater boxes using VHT hi-temp paint.

Where were you when the #2 flange released itself from the pipe on my junky Dansk exchanger on the Road Warrior? Could have saved me the 300 big ones for a new exchanger.

Do you find that welding projects just pop up now that you have a tig welder?

I used my friends welder. He doesn't have much experience welding those types of material together. It isn't particularly easy for a novice. Those pipes when originally brazed actually sit down in the collar a bit. Getting to it is a bit of a pain. It's really a matter of filling in the crack and then building outward from it. The 3-4 side wasn't leaking but I went ahead and welded them anyhow. Difficult spot to make a beautiful weld but in the end it will hold well.
