Re: 2 Buses
Hasn't popped out yet after a few short trips around town. It may have been the shit adjustment, the shifter knob was almost to the ashtray.
I will know for sure after a good mountain trip, hope there is time before winter snow.
It feels like the transmission was thoughtfully built, they even replaced the input shaft as well as the starter bushing. Also provided me with new nuts for the bowden bracket. I am also glad to see they kept the metal flange covers - German Transaxle uses cheap brittle plastic ones.
We will see. It is hard adjusting to the shifting, it isn't vague enough anymore. Finding 1st is a little strained sometimes, probably the adjustment but think I can live with it.

Re: 2 Buses
Just ordered one of these:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ ... id=1668740
Vibration is definitely coming from right upper fan shroud, closest to the fan. Don't you love chasing your tail via new junk?
Hopefully I will have a "lifetime" fan now.

Re: Generator Woes
The vibration is gone. Drove it the first time on the highway today, east into the Columbia Gorge. So smooth and quiet. And then, it started popping out of 4th. And again. Eventually I had to hold the shifter in 4th.
I am pretty upset by this to say the least. It has taken me many years to afford this rebuild. Then all the time and trouble to drop the engine again.
Is Rancho liable for shop fees? Is there anything I am missing? Shift plate is all the way to the rear.
What a week.

Re: 2 Buses
You are not the first early bay person with this 4th gear issue. See Ruckman101/asiab3 in Transaxle Forum.hambone wrote:The vibration is gone. You want the stop plate *forward* i.e. the fulcrum needs to be moved closer to the front of the car to *give you more pull* to *more fully engage* the slider assy over 4th gear.
IF this does not eradicate the popping out of 4th, please tell me if it pops under decel or acel, and if it is more pronounced cold or warm.

Re: 2 Buses
It happens wherever the adjustment lies, each extreme. Adjustments never seem to cure this symptom. It is in the guts.
Rancho may pay for warranty repair so a shop would do the labor. I was pretty pissed off. There is also a thread on Samba asking for advice.
Cold warm, doesn't matter.
ARGH here we go again welcome to the modern era.

Seriously. Now multiply your experience by the people within the seventy customers I visit who have less-than lovely experiences. I am agitating for people to please politely-but-relentlessly hold their vendors/suppliers accountable . . . to help the next customer down the line.hambone wrote: ARGH here we go again welcome to the modern era.

Re: 2 Buses
Says one rat to the other on the Titanic. Well at least Rancho is paying to have it replaced. It's going to ALways VW on Monday, home of the funky generator. First time in a shop in 14 years, I don't like it. I'm gonna tell him to be careful with my baby, wave my fist around etc.
Most of the frustration of the VW air cooled experience is not the machine, it is the parts situation, plain and simple. Fingers crossed.

Re: 2 Buses
I know a guy down south that got a hopped up Bug tranny from Rancho. Never got to know how good it was as he left shortly after he finished putting his Bug back together.
Hmmm... Ill ask though, one of the guys still keeps in touch with him.

Re: 2 Buses
Bus is at AlwaysVW, it was hard to let go! But they confirmed the trans is at fault. First time in 14 years I have been Busless.
What will be done to fix this issue? I thought bad snychros were the reason for popping out, and these are new. Someone mentioned the gears get tapered and you can't see it, but that is what micrometers etc. are for.
