GE and GD engine interchangability ?

Post by Mr Blotto » Sat Mar 10, 2012 7:59 pm

Besides hydraulics vs solid lifters, are there any other differences in these engines? Can one simply replace the other (same harness, tin, etc)?

Thanks

Nope...the whole enchilada. Have a line on a GD engine that had a fresh rebuild by VW of Canada in the 80s....still has the sticker on it. After the rebuild, it was never installed. Popped a valve cover and it looks brand new. Engine has both heads, heat exchangers, and tin installed. It had been stored indoors the whole time, and turns freely.

Just wondering if when my GE gives the ghost, the fully outfitted GD would be an easy swap. Or, if the heads on the GD would just bolt on to my GE?

I hear factory rebuilds from VW Canada were actually pretty good???

Keep whatever parts are on your engine that allow you to your current ECU and AAR and AFM.

I have seen some horrible slip-ups from Canadian engine builds, and I have seen some that were decent. For example, check the case stamped numbers . . . do they match?

Hey Blotto,

Did you snag that engine? I called on it and it had been sold.

Nope - I saw it, but didn't pull the trigger fast enough. Looked very nice, but since I don't really need it, I couldn't justify snagging it on the spot, so I decided to ponder it. Too late....

Would have been worth it for the heads alone if they were legit...
