Those lines need to be replaced. The metal cap of sorts has to be cut with stout wire cutters or the like. Then carefully use a razor knife to split the old rotten hose and gently remove it from the injectors. Then throw those worm-drive clamps that are holding the other end to the fuel rail away and use the nice ones like shown on the right side of your photo to clamp new lengths of your newly purchased reinforced 7mm ID fuel hose to both ends (rail and injector).

It's easy.

OK, I just re-read this. So those metal caps go bye-bye? and are replaced with the new fuel hose clamps?

Planning to be there Saturday. Caught some vid Sunday of the dual Grrrl power action.

Paige, are you going to have any left over exhaust paint I could talk you out of? Have a new stock exhaust for the ghia currently with only a coat of primer.

Yes,
The metal caps go away and get replaced with the good hose clamps.

Just picked up a better tool to remove them. Taking too long just snipping little bits & pieces.

Looking at the DVD & VW books, I notice the engine is removed from the stand to put the flywheel on & check end play. I was wondering if there is any reason I CAN'T do this on the stand? I have the lovely VW-specific one thanks to Joseph. I'm currently in Gladstone at Dr. Injector and can't look at it directly.

Thank you!

Isn't the stand in the way where it attaches to the engine?

Yeah, kind of. There is some room but I should've done the flywheel before I got the pistons and cylinders and all the goodies attached. I was hoping I could leave it on there since I can't move it by myself. Hal said he had some time on friday.

UPDATE:
Lots of running around STILL. Decided to replace the spark plug wires after all. Just had that nagging feeling. I mean, what if that was the only thing that kept MZ from running? Also picked up my break-in oil and ran the injectors out to Dr. Injector in Gladstone. I'm glad I did. They were fine but after the cleaning, they are excellent.
I cleaned out the engine compartment and pulled out the old compartment panels. They disintegrated immediately. I have new ABS panels but was curious how to get the old connectors out of MZ. (see picture below).

Ripping away at the old hose.

Painted Exhaust and Heater Boxes (swapping the unpainted for the painted)
And no, the 500 degree paint is not for the exhaust but for the two engine tins I forgot to bring to get powder coated. DOH!

Image
Down comes the crumbling engine compartment panels.

Image
Any recommendations on kind and gentle removal of those fasteners?

Image
Original insulation.

Image
Found these tucked up inside the insulation - I can't even remember if I did that!

Those fasteners are rivets. Drill them out and rivet the new ABS panels back in place.

I'm jealous, your injectors were all good. What did they charge you? As I told you I took the four from my bus and four extra's just in case to be cleaned and out of the eight only one was good. I ended up buying four new ones and they weren't cheap.
